couple days while Suzuki was on the bereavement list.
When the Twins acquired veteran pitcher Jaime Garcia from the Braves earlier this week, the deal included one curious detail catcher Anthony Recker. The Twins already had four catchers on their 40 man roster—Jason Castro and Chris Gimenez in the majors, plus John Ryan Murphy and Mitch Garver in Triple A—so it was far from clear why they would want the 33 year old fringe MLBer.

The move caused people to speculate that the Twins were planning to try and trade one of their current catchers.  Since the team specifically sought out Castro and signed him to a three year deal in the off season, it wouldn’t be him. Trading Gimenez also doesn’t make sense since he would likely garner very little in return and the Twins need him to pitch whenever things start getting really wacky which is apparently pretty often . That leaves Garver and Murphy, whom I personally would really not want the Twins to trade away. Just kidding! I wouldn’t care if they traded Murphy.

2017 is a pivotal season for prospect Mitch Garver

Today, however, the Twins made clear that they really are aware they already have four better catchers on the roster Michael Tonkin Jersey by sending Recker all the way down to Double A. Sadly, to make room on the Lookouts roster, they released long time farmhand Dan Rohlfing.

Pour one out for the Rohlfster.

Of course, the Twins could still be trying to trade one of their catchers. Heck, they might even be able to get something of value for Garver. They could have also just taken Recker to do a solid for the Braves—after all, the only reason he had been called up there was to cover for Kurt Suzuki for a couple days while Suzuki was on the bereavement list. Maybe they didn’t have the heart to DFA Recker again? Who knows.

The interesting thing is that despite being in Double A, Recker is still on the Twins’ 40 man roster, taking up space. Unless the Twins deal one of their other catchers—and maybe even if they do—I doubt Recker is going to stay on the 40 man for long, especially given how much Derek Falvey and Thad Levine seem to like shuffling things around.

Long story short, it sucks to be Dan Rohlfing.
